Which recorder should you choose?

There is no CleanShot X for Windows, and its developers say there are no plans for one. CleanShot X combines screenshots with screen recording. On Windows, split the job: use the built-in Snipping Tool or ShareX for screenshots, and a screen recorder such as ScreenBuddy for recordings with smart zoom, cursor effects, backgrounds, and shareable links.

Choose ScreenBuddy

Make the next step clear.

You are on Windows and the recording side of CleanShot is what you miss: zooms, cursor effects, backgrounds, captions, and a shareable link for the finished video.

Choose CleanShot X

Keep the strengths you need.

You are on a Mac and want screenshots, scrolling capture, OCR, annotation, and recordings in one menu-bar app. ScreenBuddy does not replace CleanShot’s screenshot tools.

Replace CleanShot with two Windows tools, not one

Most people miss two things from CleanShot X: quick screenshots and polished screen recordings. Windows already includes Snipping Tool (Win + Shift + S) for screenshots, and the free ShareX adds scrolling capture and annotation. For recordings that look finished, add a dedicated recorder. Trying to make one Windows app do both usually means compromising on recording.

Get the Studio Mode look on Windows

CleanShot’s Studio Mode adds animated zooms to a recording. ScreenBuddy does that from your recorded clicks, then lets you retime or remove each zoom. It also smooths the cursor, places the recording on a background with padding and rounded corners, and can follow the cursor with a glass callout bubble that magnifies small text.

Share a link instead of uploading a file

CleanShot Cloud turns a capture into a link. ScreenBuddy can publish the finished video as an unlisted link that viewers open without an account, with 2 GB of storage on the subscription. It does not offer CleanShot Pro’s custom domain, branding, or team controls, and viewers cannot leave comments.

Moving between a Mac and a Windows PC

If you keep CleanShot X on a Mac and need the same recording workflow on a Windows PC, ScreenBuddy’s subscription covers both Windows x64 and Apple silicon Macs. Your CleanShot screenshots and recordings are ordinary files, so nothing needs converting.

Will ScreenBuddy work on your computer?

Use Windows 10/11 x64 or an Apple silicon Mac with macOS 12 or later. Intel Macs and Linux do not have a current ScreenBuddy installer. On Windows, editable cursor capture requires Windows Graphics Capture on Windows 10 version 2004 (build 19041) or later. The fallback records the system cursor and disables replacement cursor effects. Check screen, microphone, system audio, and webcam capture with your own setup before recording a full lesson.

Try the same 60-second task in each editor

Record a small menu, a text field, a short explanation, and the completed result. Use the same display size and narration in both apps. Compare the corrections you need to make, then review a finished export from each. ScreenBuddy is free to record and edit, so you can make every correction before subscribing to export.

See a real ScreenBuddy zoom example →

  • Move one automatic zoom, delete an unnecessary zoom, and keep the final result in frame.
  • Trim a pause and add a pen mark without covering a control or caption.
  • Correct a technical term in the captions, then check speech and system audio.
  • Review text and cursor readability at the size your audience will actually watch.

Use MP4 for narration; reserve GIF for a short loop

An MP4 keeps speech and app sound. A GIF is useful for a short silent interaction in documentation. In our published ten-second recording sample, the tested GIF files were 13.1–17.5 times larger than the corresponding MP4 files. That is a file-format experiment on one source clip, not an app-speed benchmark or a claim of equal visual quality.
