ScreenBuddy vs ScreenFlow

ScreenFlow doesn’t run on Windows. Here’s what to use instead.

Record a Windows app, keep the zoom on the clicks that matter, caption the narration locally, and export MP4 or GIF. No timeline expertise required.

Record and edit free. Exporting and shareable links need a subscription.

Which recorder should you choose?

There is no ScreenFlow for Windows. Telestream sells ScreenFlow only for Macs, and it will not install on a PC. For the same tutorial and product-video work on Windows, choose by how much editing you need: ScreenBuddy for recordings polished with automatic zoom, cursor effects, and captions; Camtasia for a full multi-track course editor; OBS Studio for free raw capture.

Choose ScreenBuddy

Make the next step clear.

You are on Windows and want screen recordings that look finished without building every move by hand: automatic zoom, a smooth cursor, a magnifying callout, backgrounds, and local captions.

Choose ScreenFlow

Keep the strengths you need.

You are on a Mac and assemble longer videos from many sources: multi-track audio, animated titles, stock media, and detailed timeline control. ScreenFlow is a deeper production editor.

Can you run ScreenFlow on Windows at all?

Not natively. Telestream lists ScreenFlow for Apple silicon and Intel Macs running recent macOS versions only. Running macOS in a virtual machine on a PC is not a supported way to use it, and screen capture inside a VM would record the VM, not your Windows apps. If your software runs on Windows, record it with a Windows recorder.

Match the tool to the ScreenFlow job you had

People use ScreenFlow for two different jobs. One is a polished recording of an app: a tutorial, a product demo, a support answer. The other is assembling a produced video from many clips, music, and titles. ScreenBuddy covers the first on Windows with less manual work. For the second, a full timeline editor such as Camtasia is the closer match.

Let the recorder do the zoom work

In ScreenFlow you place each zoom and pan. ScreenBuddy records your clicks and creates zoom regions from them, which you can then retime, deepen, remove, or add to. For a small control, a glass callout bubble can follow the cursor and magnify what it points at instead of zooming the whole frame.

Moving between a Mac and a Windows PC

If your team uses both, ScreenBuddy’s subscription covers Windows x64 and Apple silicon Macs, so everyone records with the same editor. ScreenFlow projects cannot be opened on Windows, so plan to finish Mac projects on the Mac and start new Windows recordings in a Windows tool.

Will ScreenBuddy work on your computer?

Use Windows 10/11 x64 or an Apple silicon Mac with macOS 12 or later. Intel Macs and Linux do not have a current ScreenBuddy installer. On Windows, editable cursor capture requires Windows Graphics Capture on Windows 10 version 2004 (build 19041) or later. The fallback records the system cursor and disables replacement cursor effects. Check screen, microphone, system audio, and webcam capture with your own setup before recording a full lesson.

Try the same 60-second task in each editor

Record a small menu, a text field, a short explanation, and the completed result. Use the same display size and narration in both apps. Compare the corrections you need to make, then review a finished export from each. ScreenBuddy is free to record and edit, so you can make every correction before subscribing to export.

See a real ScreenBuddy zoom example →

  • Move one automatic zoom, delete an unnecessary zoom, and keep the final result in frame.
  • Trim a pause and add a pen mark without covering a control or caption.
  • Correct a technical term in the captions, then check speech and system audio.
  • Review text and cursor readability at the size your audience will actually watch.

Use MP4 for narration; reserve GIF for a short loop

An MP4 keeps speech and app sound. A GIF is useful for a short silent interaction in documentation. In our published ten-second recording sample, the tested GIF files were 13.1–17.5 times larger than the corresponding MP4 files. That is a file-format experiment on one source clip, not an app-speed benchmark or a claim of equal visual quality.
