Introduction

Welcome to ScreenBuddy ("we," "our," or "us"). ScreenBuddy is a Windows and Mac desktop application for screen recording and editing, with an accompanying website at https://screenbuddy.xyz. We are committed to protecting your privacy and being transparent about how we handle your data.

This Privacy Policy explains what information we collect, how we use it, how we share it, and what choices you have regarding your data when you use ScreenBuddy. By downloading, installing, or using our application or website, you agree to the practices described in this policy.

ScreenBuddy is designed with local media processing at its core. Recording, editing, zoom effects, annotations, backgrounds, previews, and exports happen on your Windows PC or Mac. Recordings are not uploaded automatically. If you choose the optional website Share service when available, the finished MP4 is uploaded to our Supabase storage so people with your link can watch it. Editable projects remain on your device. Internet access is required for subscription sign-in and verification, Lemon Squeezy license activation when using a legacy key, and application update checks. Caption transcription and other supported media enhancements run on your device; optional models require a download before use. Version 1.8.0 includes optional unlisted sharing with Google sign-in and an active subscription.

Information We Collect

Information Collected Automatically

When you visit the ScreenBuddy website, we may automatically collect certain information about your visit, including:

• Usage analytics — page views, performance data, and general website interactions collected through Vercel Analytics, Vercel Speed Insights, and, only after you select "Allow analytics," Google Analytics 4 and PostHog.
• Device and browser information — general device type, browser type, and operating system information collected through analytics services.

Information We Do NOT Collect

We want to be clear about what we do not collect:

• Local video content — your recordings and editable projects stay on your device. Only the finished video you explicitly choose to share is uploaded.
• Required desktop accounts — recording and editing do not require a ScreenBuddy account. In the 1.8.0 release, subscription export and optional sharing require Google sign-in; legacy license keys remain supported for local exports. We receive your Google account identifier, email, and basic profile through Supabase Auth and store your subscription status, upload sizes, titles, and share-link identifiers. License activation remains handled by Lemon Squeezy.
• Financial information — Lemon Squeezy handles checkout and payment details. ScreenBuddy does not receive or store your full payment-card details.

How We Use Your Information

We use the information we collect for the following purposes:

• Service delivery — to provide, maintain, and improve the ScreenBuddy application and website experience.
• Analytics and improvement — to understand how users interact with our website, identify areas for improvement, monitor performance, and optimize user experience.
• Security — to detect, prevent, and address technical issues, fraud, or abuse of the service.
• Communication — to send you important service-related announcements, such as changes to our terms or policies, if necessary.

Cookies and Tracking Technologies

The ScreenBuddy website and our third-party service providers use cookies and similar tracking technologies to operate our website and collect usage data. Below is a summary of the cookies and technologies we use:

Account Cookies

Optional sharing uses necessary Supabase authentication cookies to keep you signed in on the website. Desktop account tokens are encrypted using operating-system secure storage. Shared-video pages do not load our website analytics. Anyone with the unlisted link can watch, forward, or save the video; a link is not a password.

Analytics Cookies

We use analytics services to understand how visitors use the ScreenBuddy website:

• Vercel Analytics — collects anonymized page view and interaction data to help us understand traffic patterns and user behavior. Vercel Analytics is privacy-focused and does not use cookies for tracking individual users across sites.
• Vercel Speed Insights — collects performance data such as page load times, Core Web Vitals, and rendering metrics to help us optimize site speed and user experience.
• Google Analytics 4 — collects website events, campaign attribution, and a pseudonymous analytics client identifier only after you select "Allow analytics." Checkout links may carry non-identifying source, campaign, landing-page, CTA-placement, and operating-system fields to Lemon Squeezy for order attribution; the pseudonymous GA client identifier is included only with analytics consent. Marketing events exclude email addresses, license keys, video content, and other directly identifying input.
• PostHog — receives the same consent-gated website events as Google Analytics 4, and stores a pseudonymous device identifier so a visit can be followed from landing page to download or checkout. PostHog is loaded only after you select "Allow analytics," and receives no email addresses, license keys, video content, or form text.

You can control cookies through your browser settings. Please note that disabling cookies may affect certain features of the ScreenBuddy website.

Third-Party Services

ScreenBuddy relies on several third-party services to deliver its functionality. Each service has its own privacy practices and policies. Below is a detailed description of each service, what data it processes, and how it is used:

Vercel (Hosting, Analytics & Speed Insights)

The ScreenBuddy website is hosted on Vercel. We use Vercel Analytics to collect anonymized usage data (such as page views, visitor counts, and geographic regions) and Vercel Speed Insights to monitor performance metrics (such as page load times and Core Web Vitals). This data helps us understand usage patterns and optimize site performance. Vercel processes server logs which may include IP addresses, but these are not stored long-term or used for individual tracking. For more information, see the Vercel Privacy Policy.

Google Analytics 4 (Consent-Based Analytics)

Google Analytics 4 is loaded only after you select "Allow analytics." It helps us measure downloads, tool-to-app journeys, campaign performance, and consented purchases. Non-identifying checkout-attribution fields may be attached to Lemon Squeezy checkout links for order reporting whether or not GA consent was granted; a pseudonymous GA client identifier is attached only after consent. Lemon returns those fields with its signed order webhook, and the purchase is forwarded to GA only when the checkout recorded granted consent. We do not intentionally send email addresses, license keys, video content, or form text to Google Analytics. You can decline analytics or change your choice through the website's privacy controls. PostHog (Consent-Based Product Analytics)

PostHog is loaded only after you select "Allow analytics," and receives the same consent-gated marketing events as Google Analytics 4 — page views, CTA clicks, downloads, free-tool usage, and checkout starts, each carrying the non-identifying campaign, landing-page, CTA-placement, and operating-system fields described above. PostHog stores a pseudonymous device identifier so a single visit can be followed from landing page to download or checkout; we do not link it to a name, email address, or license key. Website data is processed on PostHog's United States cloud. We do not intentionally send email addresses, license keys, video content, or form text to PostHog. Lemon Squeezy (Checkout and License Activation)

Lemon Squeezy operates the hosted checkout, order delivery, and license activation service. Checkout data is governed by Lemon Squeezy's terms and privacy practices. When you activate or deactivate a license, the app contacts Lemon Squeezy's license API with the license key and activation data required to manage that license. A successful response may include the purchaser email stored with the order.

Google Sign-In and Supabase (Optional Sharing)

Google authenticates your sharing account. Supabase provides account authentication, our database, and private video storage. Our website issues temporary playback URLs to viewers with a valid share link. Deleting a hosted video removes the website link immediately; a playback URL already issued may work for up to one hour, and copies saved by viewers cannot be recalled.

Browser Tools

ScreenBuddy's free tools run in your browser. Recordings, uploaded source media, generated captions, calculations, and downloaded files stay on your device. The current MP4-to-GIF tool uses browser canvas processing. Browser and operating-system permission prompts still control access to your screen, camera, and microphone.

Data Sharing and Disclosure

We do not sell, rent, or trade your personal information to third parties for marketing or advertising purposes. We share your data only in the following limited circumstances:

• Service providers — data may be processed by Vercel for hosting and performance, Google Analytics and PostHog after consent, Lemon Squeezy for checkout and subscriptions, and Google and Supabase for optional account sign-in and video sharing, as described above.
• Legal requirements — we may disclose your information if required to do so by law, regulation, legal process, or governmental request, or when we believe disclosure is necessary to protect our rights, your safety, or the safety of others.
• Business transfers — in the event of a merger, acquisition, reorganization, or sale of assets, your information may be transferred as part of that transaction. We will notify you via a prominent notice on our website of any change in ownership or use of your personal information.

Data Security

We take the security of your data seriously and implement appropriate technical and organizational measures to protect your information:

• Encryption in transit — all data transmitted between your browser and the ScreenBuddy website is encrypted using TLS (HTTPS). This includes any data sent to third-party services.
• Local video processing — desktop-app video content is processed on your Windows PC or Mac. License activation and update traffic do not include your recording media.

While we strive to use commercially acceptable means to protect your information, no method of transmission over the Internet or method of electronic storage is 100% secure. We cannot guarantee the absolute security of your data.

Data Retention

Recording and editing do not require an account. Subscription verification and optional sharing use an account. For these services, we retain account and billing identifiers while the account exists. Specifically:

• Analytics data — Vercel Analytics and Speed Insights data is retained according to Vercel's data retention policies, which typically aggregate and anonymize data over time.
• Hosted videos — cancellation preserves uploads through the paid period. After subscription expiry, existing links remain available for 30 days, then hosted videos are removed by scheduled cleanup. Refunds revoke sharing access immediately. You can delete a hosted video from your account without deleting your local project.
• Upload records — deleted-video metadata is kept for up to 90 days for support and rate limits. Cancelled upload reservations can occupy capacity for up to 48 hours while upload credentials expire. Billing identifiers and processed event records are retained to maintain subscription history. Contact us to request account deletion.

Depending on your jurisdiction, you may have the following rights regarding your personal information:

• Right to restrict processing — you have the right to request that we restrict processing of your personal information under certain circumstances.

Children's Privacy

ScreenBuddy is not intended for children under the age of 13. We do not knowingly collect personal information from children under 13. If we become aware that we have inadvertently collected personal information from a child under 13, we will take steps to delete such information promptly.

If you are a parent or guardian and believe that your child has provided personal information to ScreenBuddy, please contact us immediately so that we can take appropriate action to remove the information from our systems.

International Data Transfers

The ScreenBuddy website is hosted in the United States. If you are accessing the website from outside the United States, please be aware that your information may be transferred to, stored, and processed in the United States or other countries where our service providers operate.

By using the ScreenBuddy website, you consent to the transfer of your information to the United States and other jurisdictions. We take appropriate steps to ensure that international data transfers comply with applicable data protection laws, including the use of standard contractual clauses where required.

Do Not Track Signals

Some web browsers transmit "Do Not Track" (DNT) signals. Because there is no universally accepted standard for how to respond to DNT signals, ScreenBuddy does not currently respond to DNT signals. However, we are committed to minimizing data collection and only collecting information that is necessary to provide and improve our service.

Links to Other Websites

The ScreenBuddy website may contain links to third-party websites or services that are not operated by us. If you click on a third-party link, you will be directed to that third party's site. We strongly advise you to review the privacy policy of every site you visit. We have no control over and assume no responsibility for the content, privacy policies, or practices of any third-party sites or services.
