Introduction
Welcome to ScreenBuddy ("we," "our," or "us"). ScreenBuddy is a macOS desktop application for screen recording and editing, with an accompanying website at https://screenbuddy.xyz. We are committed to protecting your privacy and being transparent about how we handle your data.
This Privacy Policy explains what information we collect, how we use it, how we share it, and what choices you have regarding your data when you use ScreenBuddy. By downloading, installing, or using our application or website, you agree to the practices described in this policy.
ScreenBuddy is designed with privacy at its core. All video processing, including recording, editing, zoom effects, annotations, background application, and format conversion, happens entirely on your Mac. Your video files are never uploaded to our servers.
Information We Collect
Information Collected Automatically
When you visit the ScreenBuddy website, we may automatically collect certain information about your visit, including:
- Usage analytics — page views, feature usage patterns, and general interaction data collected through Vercel Analytics and Vercel Speed Insights to help us understand how our website is used and improve performance.
- Device and browser information — general device type, browser type, and operating system information collected through analytics services.
Information We Do NOT Collect
We want to be clear about what we do not collect:
- Video content — your screen recordings, edited videos, and exported files are processed entirely on your Mac. We never upload, access, store, or view your video content on our servers. All processing happens locally on your device.
- Personal accounts or credentials — ScreenBuddy does not require you to create an account or sign in. We do not collect email addresses, names, or profile information.
- Financial information — payment details for purchasing ScreenBuddy are handled entirely by the Mac App Store or our payment processor and are never transmitted to or stored on our servers.
How We Use Your Information
We use the information we collect for the following purposes:
- Service delivery — to provide, maintain, and improve the ScreenBuddy application and website experience.
- Analytics and improvement — to understand how users interact with our website, identify areas for improvement, monitor performance, and optimize user experience.
- Security — to detect, prevent, and address technical issues, fraud, or abuse of the service.
- Communication — to send you important service-related announcements, such as changes to our terms or policies, if necessary.
Cookies and Tracking Technologies
The ScreenBuddy website and our third-party service providers use cookies and similar tracking technologies to operate our website and collect usage data. Below is a summary of the cookies and technologies we use:
Analytics Cookies
We use analytics services to understand how visitors use the ScreenBuddy website:
- Vercel Analytics — collects anonymized page view and interaction data to help us understand traffic patterns and user behavior. Vercel Analytics is privacy-focused and does not use cookies for tracking individual users across sites.
- Vercel Speed Insights — collects performance data such as page load times, Core Web Vitals, and rendering metrics to help us optimize site speed and user experience.
You can control cookies through your browser settings. Please note that disabling cookies may affect certain features of the ScreenBuddy website.
Third-Party Services
ScreenBuddy relies on several third-party services to deliver its functionality. Each service has its own privacy practices and policies. Below is a detailed description of each service, what data it processes, and how it is used:
Vercel (Hosting, Analytics & Speed Insights)
The ScreenBuddy website is hosted on Vercel. We use Vercel Analytics to collect anonymized usage data (such as page views, visitor counts, and geographic regions) and Vercel Speed Insights to monitor performance metrics (such as page load times and Core Web Vitals). This data helps us understand usage patterns and optimize site performance. Vercel processes server logs which may include IP addresses, but these are not stored long-term or used for individual tracking. For more information, see the Vercel Privacy Policy.
Google Fonts
We use Google Fonts to load the Inter and Poppins typefaces on our website. When you visit the ScreenBuddy website, your browser makes a request to Google's font servers to download these fonts. Google may log this request, which includes your IP address. Google Fonts does not set cookies. For more information, see the Google Privacy Policy.
FFmpeg.wasm (Online Video Processing)
The free online tools on the ScreenBuddy website use FFmpeg.wasm for converting video files from WebM to MP4 format. This library runs entirely within your web browser using WebAssembly technology. Your video files are processed locally on your device and are never sent to any external server. The FFmpeg.wasm core files are loaded from the ScreenBuddy website, but only the library code is downloaded — your video data remains on your device at all times.
Data Sharing and Disclosure
We do not sell, rent, or trade your personal information to third parties for marketing or advertising purposes. We share your data only in the following limited circumstances:
- Service providers — we share data with the third-party services described above (Vercel, Google Fonts) strictly for the purposes of providing and improving the ScreenBuddy website. These providers act as data processors on our behalf and are contractually obligated to protect your data.
- Legal requirements — we may disclose your information if required to do so by law, regulation, legal process, or governmental request, or when we believe disclosure is necessary to protect our rights, your safety, or the safety of others.
- Business transfers — in the event of a merger, acquisition, reorganization, or sale of assets, your information may be transferred as part of that transaction. We will notify you via a prominent notice on our website of any change in ownership or use of your personal information.
Data Security
We take the security of your data seriously and implement appropriate technical and organizational measures to protect your information:
- Encryption in transit — all data transmitted between your browser and the ScreenBuddy website is encrypted using TLS (HTTPS). This includes any data sent to third-party services.
- Local video processing — your video content is processed entirely on your Mac. This is the strongest form of data protection — your recordings never leave your device.
While we strive to use commercially acceptable means to protect your information, no method of transmission over the Internet or method of electronic storage is 100% secure. We cannot guarantee the absolute security of your data.
Data Retention
Because ScreenBuddy does not require user accounts, we retain minimal data. Specifically:
- Analytics data — Vercel Analytics and Speed Insights data is retained according to Vercel's data retention policies, which typically aggregate and anonymize data over time.
If you have any concerns about data retention, please contact us at the information provided below. We will make every effort to address your inquiry within 30 days.
Your Rights and Choices
Depending on your jurisdiction, you may have the following rights regarding your personal information:
- Right to access — you have the right to request a copy of the personal information we hold about you.
- Right to rectification — you have the right to request correction of any inaccurate personal information.
- Right to erasure — you have the right to request deletion of your personal information.
- Right to restrict processing — you have the right to request that we restrict processing of your personal information under certain circumstances.
- Right to data portability — you have the right to receive your personal information in a structured, commonly used, machine-readable format.
- Right to object — you have the right to object to our processing of your personal information under certain circumstances.
To exercise any of these rights, please contact us using the contact information provided at the bottom of this page. We will respond to your request within 30 days.
For California Residents (CCPA)
If you are a California resident, you have additional rights under the California Consumer Privacy Act (CCPA), including the right to know what personal information we collect, the right to delete your personal information, and the right to opt-out of the sale of your personal information. We do not sell personal information. To exercise your CCPA rights, please contact us using the information below.
For European Economic Area (EEA) Residents
If you are located in the EEA, our legal basis for processing your personal information is based on: (a) your consent (e.g., when you accept analytics cookies), and (b) our legitimate interests (e.g., improving the service through analytics). You have the right to lodge a complaint with your local data protection authority if you believe your rights have been violated.
Children's Privacy
ScreenBuddy is not intended for children under the age of 13. We do not knowingly collect personal information from children under 13. If we become aware that we have inadvertently collected personal information from a child under 13, we will take steps to delete such information promptly.
If you are a parent or guardian and believe that your child has provided personal information to ScreenBuddy, please contact us immediately so that we can take appropriate action to remove the information from our systems.
International Data Transfers
The ScreenBuddy website is hosted in the United States. If you are accessing the website from outside the United States, please be aware that your information may be transferred to, stored, and processed in the United States or other countries where our service providers operate.
By using the ScreenBuddy website, you consent to the transfer of your information to the United States and other jurisdictions. We take appropriate steps to ensure that international data transfers comply with applicable data protection laws, including the use of standard contractual clauses where required.
Do Not Track Signals
Some web browsers transmit "Do Not Track" (DNT) signals. Because there is no universally accepted standard for how to respond to DNT signals, ScreenBuddy does not currently respond to DNT signals. However, we are committed to minimizing data collection and only collecting information that is necessary to provide and improve our service.
Links to Other Websites
The ScreenBuddy website may contain links to third-party websites or services that are not operated by us. If you click on a third-party link, you will be directed to that third party's site. We strongly advise you to review the privacy policy of every site you visit. We have no control over and assume no responsibility for the content, privacy policies, or practices of any third-party sites or services.
Changes to This Privacy Policy
We may update this Privacy Policy from time to time to reflect changes in our practices, technologies, legal requirements, or other factors. When we make changes, we will update the "Last updated" date at the top of this page. If we make material changes that affect how we handle your personal information, we will provide a more prominent notice, such as a banner on our website.
We encourage you to review this Privacy Policy periodically to stay informed about how we protect your data. Your continued use of ScreenBuddy after any changes to this Privacy Policy constitutes your acceptance of the updated policy.
