HOW IT WORKS
01

03

Switch or snapshot

Pick a different camera if you have several, or download a snapshot.

Test your camera online before the call that matters

Nothing derails a meeting, interview, or recording faster than a camera that will not turn on. This free online webcam test gives you a quick, private way to test your camera and confirm everything works before you go live — no account, no software install, no footage leaving your machine.

What the test checks

  • Does the camera turn on and show a live image.
  • Resolution — the pixel dimensions your camera is delivering.
  • Frame rate — how many frames per second it captures.
  • Multiple cameras — switch between built-in and external webcams.

What to do if your webcam is not detected

If the preview stays black or you get a permission error, work through these steps in order:

  • Allow camera access — click the camera icon in your browser’s address bar and set it to Allow, then restart the test.
  • Close other apps — Zoom, Teams, FaceTime, OBS, or Photo Booth can hold the camera; most systems only let one app use it at a time.
  • Check OS privacy settings — on macOS, System Settings → Privacy & Security → Camera; on Windows, Settings → Privacy → Camera; make sure your browser is enabled.
  • Try another browser — if it works in a second browser, the issue is a permission in the first one.

Your privacy

The test uses your browser’s built-in camera API and renders the stream locally. There is no server in the loop, so your video is never transmitted anywhere. Take a snapshot if you want to check framing — it is generated on your device and downloads straight to your computer.

Once your camera checks out, ScreenBuddy can record polished Mac demos with a webcam overlay, auto-zoom, and clean export.

FAQ

Frequently Asked Questions

Is this webcam test private?
Yes. The video stream stays entirely on your device and is shown only in your browser. Nothing is uploaded, recorded to a server, or stored. When you close the tab or click Stop, the camera is released.
Why is my camera not working?
The most common cause is a blocked permission — check the camera icon in your browser’s address bar and allow access. Also make sure no other app (Zoom, Teams, Photo Booth) is holding the camera, since most systems only let one app use it at a time.
How do I see my webcam resolution?
Start the test and the live resolution (for example 1280×720 or 1920×1080) and frame rate appear below the preview, read directly from the camera’s active video track.
Does it work on a phone?
Yes. It runs in mobile browsers too and can switch between front and rear cameras where the device exposes them as separate inputs.
