What is a free online audio recorder?

A free online audio recorder captures your microphone in the browser, shows a live level meter, and lets you play back and download the clip. This tool uses the browser’s audio APIs and keeps the file on your device. Use it for a voice note, a voiceover take, or a quick sound check. It does not mix system audio or edit a timeline.

How do I get a clean take?

Allow microphone access, watch the meter, and speak at the volume you will use later. Green to yellow is usable; red is clipping. Record, play it back on headphones, and listen for room echo, keyboard noise, and a second device that is still selected. Re-record until the clip matches what you heard in the room.

When should I record voice with the screen instead?

If the words explain clicks on an interface, capture both at once. Use the microphone test first, then the online screen recorder with System + microphone, or ScreenBuddy on Mac and Windows for an editable demo. Turn a script into captions with the subtitle generator.

FAQ

Frequently Asked Questions

Is this audio recorder free and private?
Yes. It records using your browser's built-in audio API, the clip stays on your device, and nothing is uploaded to a server. No sign-up is required.
What audio format does it record?
Your browser chooses a supported MediaRecorder format. Many desktop browsers produce WebM/Opus, while others may use an MP4-based audio format. The download uses an extension that matches the format reported by the browser.
Why is my recording silent?
Check that you allowed microphone permission, that the right input is selected at the OS level, and that the mic is not muted. The live level meter is the quickest check — if it does not move while you speak, no audio is being captured.
Can I record system audio too?
This tool records your microphone. To capture system or tab audio with the screen, use the online screen recorder and enable “Share audio.” For an edited walkthrough, ScreenBuddy supports screen and microphone recording on Mac and Windows.
Can I use this as a voice recorder for a product demo?
Yes, for a standalone voiceover take. For narration locked to a screen walkthrough, record microphone and screen together in ScreenBuddy so the voice sits on the same timeline as zooms and captions.
Does the file leave my computer?
Only if you later attach or upload the download yourself. This page never sends the recording to ScreenBuddy’s servers.
