Start an export, return to the editor, and continue adjusting the canvas while the render runs in the background.

What this recording shows
Start a render from the current project
The recording shows the export workflow followed by a return to the editor. In the 1.8.0 release, the running export uses a snapshot of the project taken when the job starts.
Continue editing deliberately
You can make further changes while that snapshot renders. Those later changes do not alter the running job. Start another export if they should appear in the published file.
Inspect the completed file
Open the finished MP4 outside the editor and verify that it is the version you intend to publish. Keep the project and export distinct so a later edit is not confused with the already-rendered snapshot.
